This book was born out of the intention to speculate on possible answers to a few questions: How can the disciplinary field of architecture offer approaches for the decolonization of the present? What methods can we employ to position architecture within the debate on decolonisation? And, thinking of a transformative pedagogy, how can we reimagine institutions linked to architecture, and their modes of action?
The dialogues on the decolonisation of architecture brought together in the book address the theme through concrete practices and actions. Among the issues discussed by architects, artists, critics, authors and thinkers, several stand out: the role of diasporas in history, seeking to rewrite emancipatory narratives about the relationship between colonised and coloniser; the scales of action in spatial practices; personal stories; and pedagogical commentaries.
These contributions openly challenge colonial legacies, along with the difficulties and risks that come with doing so. The aim is to expand the scope of architecture as a discipline, even when there is no certainty or convergence of ideas about its tools. \\\"On towers and groves: remnants of the fordian city\\\" focuses on the remains of a Fordist city. Ji\u00f4n Kiim has been conducting photographic research of industrial ruins in Greater Porto, searching for the specific temporality of such abandonment and for the suspension of contemporary frenetic rhythms. This book is the result of a new methodology where Ji\u00f4n Kiim abandoned the maps that have usually guided her, and wandered through the city by following the clues that appeared in the sky. The artist found curious juxtapositions: brick industrial chimneys, which are what remains of many of the old factories of the 19th<\/sup> and 20th century today - decontextualized in the midst of buildings that have emerged since; and forests that stem in the wasteland ruins, where vegetation grows wildly - constituting habitat for particular forms of life. The book was conceived by Ji\u00f4n Kiim and coordinated by Jo\u00e3o Pedro Amorim. Yearbook\u201921 is the third volume in INSTITUTO\u2019s annual series, capturing a year of cultural production and reflection in Porto. Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, the programme expanded its reach, nurturing exchanges between architecture, art, research, and community practice.
The book documents interventions that blurred the boundaries between inside and outside: from workshops that transformed abandoned areas into shared public spaces, to artistic actions on INSTITUTO\u2019s fa\u00e7ade that challenged architectural heritage and questioned the city\u2019s built fabric. Other projects extended this dialogue into the streets, reimagining vacant houses and creating spaces of refuge for overlooked forms of life.
Memory was another central theme. Contributions reflected on informal living in Luanda, explored colonial legacies, and examined the intersections of race, housing, and peripheral geographies in Portugal. Debates and archival work highlighted how critical reflections on the past can reshape understandings of the present.
Bridging distances remained key: INSTITUTO co-organised Arquiteturas Film Festival, hosted cycles of Angolan cinema, and opened space for new curatorial perspectives. Yearbook\u201920 is the second volume in INSTITUTO\u2019s annual series, documenting cultural events and collaborations in Porto during a year profoundly shaped by the Covid-19 pandemic. Structured in three chapters - Bodies, Fragments, Places - the book continues INSTITUTO\u2019s mission of promoting experimentation at the intersections of architecture, art, and cultural practice. Paradoxically, 2020 was also a year of growth. INSTITUTO formalised its structure as a non-profit organisation, secured its first funding through Criat\u00f3rio, and strengthened partnerships and communication strategies essential for resilience.
Bodies interrogates representation and diversity in Portuguese society, exposing inequalities and questioning memorials, monuments, and the presence of racialised bodies in public space. Fragments focuses on small-scale observations, from explorations of vacant land to dialogues with archival drawings, reflecting on traces of Portugal\u2019s industrial legacy. Places highlights overlooked geographies: social housing in Braga, Lisbon\u2019s taverns, Ecuador\u2019s transformative landscapes, and Luanda\u2019s Kinaxixi Square.

\\\"S\u00f3 Fachada\\\" is a project, developed in partnership with Underdogs Gallery, that <\/span>proposed to reframe the significance of an empty building, bringing new life to its current condition, transforming its fa\u00e7ade for the enjoyment of the city and its inhabitants. <\/span>Curated by Underdogs Gallery, Pauline Foessel and Alexandre Farto (Vhils), the artists Kruella d\u2019Enfer, \u00b1MaisMenos\u00b1 and Berru were invited to do art residencies and to produce temporary interventions in the fa\u00e7ade of the building.
