Instituto is a focal point for different forms of cultural expression. It is the result of a project to breathe new life into an old warehouse, which, like much of Porto’s built heritage, had lain abandoned for several decades. In 2018, the building was restored by Paulo Moreira architectures, which opened a studio in the building and created Instituto as an interdisciplinary extension of their practice. Instituto has become a place for sharing and debating architecture, art, design, urban culture and spatial practices, with an emphasis on matters of social and political concern in contemporary society.
Instituto is located on Rua dos Clérigos, in the historic centre of Porto, within a short distance of some of the city’s main monuments and landmarks, such as Clérigos Tower, Avenida dos Aliados, São Bento Station, the Cathedral and the Portuguese Centre of Photography. There is a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops in the vicinity, as well as public transport links (metro, bus and taxis) covering the whole city.
