Data, the New Black Gold explores how citizens could take ownership of the data generated from their cities to prevent exploitation. On a site visit to Lagos (Nigeria) and Freetown (Sierra Leone), documentation is taken in the most populated streets and markets of the city. The concept of citizen controlled data collection, is illustrated in a series of informal mobile devices called Area Snap. Using data from the Area Snap devices a digital city is collected, formed, stored, multiplied, valued and owned by citizens. These devices stage the in-between space of the physical reality and digital reality.
