Flats | Shawn Rowe
15.05.2024
On the 15th of May, we held Shawn Rowe's open studio, in which the artist shared the processes and results of his residency in April and May at INSTITUTO. Through his ongoing project, FLATS, Shawn explores the aesthetics of urban housing using the cyanotype process to create prints inspired by the buildings of Porto. FLATS delves into the evolving landscape of urban life and the impact of gentrification on cities. This ongoing transformation often leads to the erosion of the city's unique character, as developers prioritize fast and economic construction without considering the surrounding spaces.
Shawn Rowe is a Philadelphia-based artist whose work merges traditional modernist ideals and contemporary urban design principles. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Columbia College Chicago and has exhibited widely in the US and abroad.
