Before a house has even been completed, it has already started to decay. We are made to believe that architecture offers stable, permanent protections, oblivious to the passing of time; but a house is in constant transformation. In Porto, houses in various degrees of disrepair, repair or (re)construction are unavoidably present. UNBUILT is a study on the vacant houses of Porto, and an inquiry into the fluidity of architecture. Through the process of casting, UNBUILT materialises the processes of growth and decay, construction and deconstruction, what has been and what has yet to come. Solidifying snapshots of a building’s life, the casts blur the relations between the unfinished and the ruined, asking how we perceive, imagine and engage in our built environment.
