The project focused on identifying and analysing representations of colonialism in Porto, such as signs, mural paintings and monuments that inhabit the public space. Filmmaking as a tool for knowledge production and direct interaction with the streets of Porto and its inhabitants became a key method in seeking to ascertain people’s general knowledge about Portugal’s colonial legacy. The project aims to enhance our understanding of the complexity of enforced narratives, used as a rhetorical device that gives rise to uncritical, fixed perspectives on the past and continues to be reproduced ideologically, institutionally and socially. Recovery from the historical legacy of violent white supremacy and colonialism will involve collectively dismantling, dissolving and transforming the structures built during this period in order to move from denial to recognition.
